Anti-gay speaker Scott Lively banned from Temecula clubhouse

The Murrieta-Temecula Republican Assembly invited controversial anti-gay-equality activist and former Temecula resident Scott Lively to speak at a meeting April 3
But the MTRA may have to change its plans after its president, Bob Kowell, admitted Wednesday the golf clubhouse slated to host the speech by Scott Lively called to cancel the event.
Kowell said the Temeku Hills clubhouse called him Tuesday afternoon to call off the event after receiving threats of a demonstration if Lively were allowed to speak
The assembly still plans to host Lively, perhaps in a private home, Kowell said. The event "might be more private than public."
The clubhouse is owned by the Temeku Hills homeowners association.
Association President Ron Frederick could not be reached Wednesday afternoon for comment.
Lively is the founder of Abiding Truth Ministries
and lives in Massachusetts.
He co-wrote the book "The Pink Swastika," described in a review on his ATM's website as "a thoroughly researched, eminently readable, demolition of the 'gay' myth, symbolized by the pink triangle, that the Nazis were anti-homosexual."
The book argues that homosexuals held key posts in the Nazi regime.
A 2005 report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights watchdog group, has denounced the book's argument as "utterly false," saying the Nazis routinely killed homosexuals. The SPLC lists Abiding Truth Ministries as an anti-gay hate group.
Kowell said Lively's views have been distorted. Lively does not advocate violence against gay people, he said, adding it's not fair that Lively can't talk about a "homosexual cult."

California GOP Group Hosts Author Who Claims Gays Behind Holocaust
by Casey Sanchez, for Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)
Mar 25 2009
A chapter of a group once described by Ronald Reagan as the “conscience of the Republican Party” has announced
plans to host a speech by the author of a book that falsely claims that homosexuals largely orchestrated the Holocaust.
The Murrieta-Temecula Republican Assembly
, a local chapter of the conservative GOPher activist group California Republican Assembly
, says it will hear on April 3
from Scott Lively
— a man it boastfully describes as “The Pastor Vilified by the Newspapers as a Hater Because of his stand Against the Promotion of Homosexuality.”
Lively, who runs Abiding Truth Ministries, co-authored the notorious book The Pink Swastika: Homosexuality in the Nazi Party and claims that “the Nazi Party was entirely controlled by militaristic male homosexuals throughout its short history.”
The book’s crude thesis, that gay men played instrumental roles in forming the Third Reich and carrying out the Holocaust, has been thoroughly discredited
by real historians. (Lively’s speech to the Murrieta-Temecula group is entitled “The Pink Swastika.”
Lively is also co-founder of the anti-gay hate group Watchmen on the Walls
The Murrieta-Temecula Republican Assembly’s leader did not return a message left by Hatewatch, but its website, adorned with the words “God Bless America,” does note that Lively “is called a ‘Hater’ by the leftist Southern Poverty Law Center.” (The SPLC lists Abiding Truth Ministries as a hate group because of its promotion of clearly false allegations about homosexuals.) CRA President Mike Spence said that local chapters like Murrieta-Temecula operate independently.
March has been a busy month for Lively. Just a few weeks ago, he flew to the Ugandan capital of Kampala for an anti-gay conference, where he argued that gays and lesbians should be forced into conversion therapy as an “alternative” to Uganda’s current criminal punishment for homosexuality: life in prison.
Lively compared the lives of lesbians and gays to those of alcoholics, claiming that “to give arrestees the choice of therapy instead of imprisonment [is] similar to the therapy option I chose after being arrested for drunk driving in 1985 (during which time I accepted the Lord and was healed and transformed into a Christian activist).”
For years, Temecula was the home base of Lively’s Abiding Truth Ministries. But he has recently relocated
his operations to Springfield, Mass. He also keeps up a busy speaking schedule in Russia and various former Soviet republics, promoting his book. "The Poisoned Stream" is a sequel to "The Pink Swastika".

Beginning LABOR DAY
Seven days of action
Urge the Governor and our Legislators to Pass Real Health Care Reform That Works for All Californians
Dear San Diego Democratic Club Members and Friends:
On this Labor Day, the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO is encouraging all Californians to weigh in for quality health care for all.
These next seven working days will be critical to all the efforts that the SDDC embarked upon when it endorsed Sheila Kuehl's single payer bill earlier this year and signed onto the SEIU's It's Our Health Care effort.
If you want to do something significant for worker's rights this week, please take a moment to contact our elected officials on the important issue of health care for all.
For more information, go to:
and send a letter.
You can also check the California Labor Federation's site at:
The following are the principles advocated by the It's Our Health Care Coalition:
1. Quality, affordable healthcare that allows all Californians to get the healthcare they need when they need it.
2. Insurance reforms to control costs and allow everyone access to quality healthcare and coverage.
3. Employers and government sharing responsibility and risk with consumers.
4. Limits on the risk and burdens placed on individual consumers and families, and protecting them from being forced to buy coverage they cannot afford and that does not cover their healthcare needs.
5. Prevention and safety efforts to help individuals get healthy and stay healthy, by providing healthy communities and choices, while not placing financial barriers to care.
6. Policies to preserve and strengthen the public hospitals, emergency rooms, and trauma centers that all Californians rely on.
7. Efforts to control costs, while protecting benefits and preventing increased financial barriers to care.
Please do what you can to help this effort THIS WEEK.
Alex Sachs, SDDC Legislative Advocate
